ATTRACTIVE ROOFS FOR MOSCOW’S FARMING ENTERPRISES
Public housing construction with attractive terraced houses in the countryside near Moscow
Thursday 11, December 2008
The city of Moscow is building new estates in the surrounding countryside. In Medyn, a small town in the administrative district of Kaluga 200 km west of Moscow, 15 to 20 new houses were built every month in the first half of 2008. Around one hundred homes were completed in total, and the same amount are already agreed to be built in 2009. The public housing construction programme is under the patronage of Yuri Luzhkov, the Lord Mayor of Moscow. What is special about the project is that living space on a large scale is being created in a rural area and with public money, without resorting to the typical high-rise estates. With this initiative Luzhkov’s intention is to provide local employees for small and medium-sized agricultural enterprises and businesses which process agricultural produce in the countryside around Moscow. To do so he is creating attractive and affordable living space, which in this form is unusual in Russia. The long-term goal of the policy is to improve food supplies to the city’s population.
To implement the project, Moscow administration secured the services of the OAO DSK-1 construction company and Monier’s Russian subsidiary Braas DSK-1. The roofing specialist is responsible for the entire supply chain from the architectural roof planning to training the craftsmen to become competent roofers. Due to its experience in the B2B sector and the readily available technical experts and qualified roofers, the company is particularly predestined to carry out large projects. OAO DSK-1 is responsible for the overall planning and implementation of the remaining building trades.
Braas DSK-1 employs a licensed department of experts for planning and architecture. For the housing project in Medyn they developed an attractive pitched roof with a surface area of around 300 square metres per building. They used the Frankfurter Pfanne concrete roof tiles, which are also popular elsewhere in Russia, in various colours. Roofing system components such as underlays, skylights, gutters, snow guard systems and lightning protection completed the supply package and provided the roofs with the necessary functionalities. Moreover, it was possible to construct the roof framework to allow attic living space, thus increasing the value and quality of the houses.
As an additional service, Braas DSK-1 was able to provide roofing specialists who helped lay the roofing tiles and ensure proper workmanship. In five training sessions lasting five days each, the company trained 50 construction workers to become qualified roofers at its own training centre. Twice a week experts from Monier visited the building site to ensure that the work was being carried out properly and according to schedule.
Braas DSK-1 is a joint venture between the Monier Group and the Russian construction company OAO DSK-1. It employs 180 people in Russia and produces roofing tiles in two plants; one in Moscow and one near Krasnodar, not far from the future Olympic town of Sotschi.
A passion for quality and nothing but the best in customer service are what make Monier the leading worldwide manufacturer of roofing materials for pitched roofs and chimney systems. The company operates in 46 countries, with production facilities at over 200 locations. In 2007, the company’s 11,800 employees achieved a turnover of 1.6 billion euros.
