NAKANO-KU, TOKYO

The roof of this traditional Japanese-style residence in the area of Nakano-ku in Tokyo was previously covered with dark roof tiles common to this type of building. Over the last decade, however, several modern apartments had been built in the area and the roof no longer fit to the surroundings of the neighborhood.

Interlocking clay tiles from MONIER in Japan

The owner saw a need to renovate the roof of this home to blend better with the other buildings, but with this architectural style, most owners are hesitant to make any large changes to the building in fear of losing the traditional appearance. Nevertheless, as light coloured roofs as well as brighter colours matched better with the modern-style surroundings, the owner chose to re-roof the house with two shades of contrasting light and bright tiles. The result set a more European tone to the building and gave it a blended, more modern look and feel while keeping the traditional appearance.

The MONIER business unit in Japan contributed the materials for this project, which included the Clayrion interlocking clay tile in ivory for the top part of the roof, and Caresse in persimmon orange for the lower roof. The Divoroll and Metalroll underlays were also used.
