LISTED MULTI-FAMILY HOUSES
Hamburg, Germany
The twenty three residential buildings had been in constant use since 1899 with out renovation and therefore no longer met modern day living standards. When an upgrade of the buildings was finally decided upon, it was clear that the historic "Grunderzeit" façades of the buildings would need to be retained as much as possible to preserve the character. The tenants were involved in the discussions at every step of the way.
The modernisation program included the development of 234 living units arranged in courtyards behind the façades. The most up-to-date energy saving features were installed including windows, heating systems and wall and roof insulation.
The tenants chose MONIER Germany's Braas Harzer Pfanne tiles in classical red to harmonise with the natural brick buildings, which are punctuated with stylish white architectural elements. The softly undulating profile of the tiles brought depth and texture to the large, steep roof surface. They delivered a strength and robustness which was detailed in the demanding project brief, along with a guaranteed ability to withstand extreme weather conditions.
The buildings now offer those who live there the double benefit of living in an historic place of beauty and interest, combined with modern day standards of comfort.
