MONIER project in Germany
Braas Turmalin tiles provide a touch of home and Swedish style.

When the Swedish community living in Frankfurt had the chance to build their own church and community centre, they wanted to create a building which would remind them of home. The roofs, typical of the Dalarna region in Sweden, have a steep pitch to prevent the build up of snowfall in the winter. This reduces the risk of the roofs collapsing under the extra weight.

Braas Turmalin tiles, manufactured by MONIER Germany, were chosen. They worked well with the steep pitch of the roof and their matt grey colour created a look which was both elegant and restrained. Also, the tiles had a perfect fit for the architectural requirements and the batten spacing planned. The finished clear and flat look was both striking and reminiscent of the roofs back home in Sweden. It had transported a bit of tradition and national pride to Frankfurt.

The project was awarded a prize in the company’s 2007 Gut Bedacht architecture competition.
