MONIER Malaysia starts “Cool Schools” programme
Friday 23, April 2010
“Going green begins with the community.” With this as its credo, MONIER Malaysia recently started its: “Cool School” initiative, which aims at providing Malaysian school children with a better learning environment.
What is “Cool School” about? MONIER has shortlisted a few schools in Malaysia with old and dilapidated, heat-trapping roofs that urgently need upgrades. These roofs are now being replaced by a MONIER CoolRoof, a system which was especially developed for hot-climate countries to optimise the roof’s thermal performance by using a combination of heat reflection, ventilation and insulation products. “SMK Sultan Abdul Samad” in Petaling Jaya was the first school to benefit from the initiative – and to put the joy back into schooling for students and teachers. In January 2010 the school’s gymnasium, in which over 200 students gather every day for an assembly, was retrofitted with a CoolRoof. The resulting reduction in indoor temperature by approximately 5-6 degrees without energy-intensive air-condition impressed the teachers as much as the students, who can now comfortably sit through extensive meetings or enjoy their physical education lessons.
